Helper Wanted: Only Warriors Need Apply

In today’s modern culture, even among believers in Yeshua there is a lot of discussion about the roles of men and women. With this in mind, I wanted to write a little bit about one of the least discussed and yet possibly the most important role that exists for both men and women. Let’s begin by looking at Genesis 2:18: 18 Then Adonai Elohim said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. Let Me make a well-matched helper for him.” While this verse is quite familiar to almost all believers, way too many believers base their understanding of this verse upon the story from their children’s bible instead of what the words in the text actually say. As a result, hasatan (the adversary) has been abl

Are We Seeking His Presence or His Glory?

A group of people had just finished a worship service. As they exited the sanctuary where they had gathered, I overheard their comments. I heard one person say “G-D surely was here today.” Another said “I totally felt the Spirit moving.” One more said “There was a special move of G-D this morning.” I had been in the service, and I was in full agreement with each comment. The worship service was exciting and moving, and the sermon was equally powerful. It seemed that everyone who attended the service felt the same way that G-D had shown up and His people had worshipped him. The experience and the conversation made me think about a series of verses from Exodus chapter 33: Exodus 33:9 After Mos

It Should Be Like Looking in a Mirror

I remember the very first time I heard someone say the words, “When you read the Bible, you must read it biblically.” It sounded a little simple-minded and even a little bit goofy. But, the longer I study the Scriptures, the more important and valid this statement becomes. What does this statement mean? It means that the only way someone can read and understand the Bible is to read it from within its pages. Too often, we are trying to read the Bible through the lens of the 21st century and through the lens of our own culture and thoughts. This almost always results in a wrong understanding of the Scriptures. In many cases, it causes the reader to come to false and faulty conclusions. Let me

A Cover-up of a Cover-up of a Cover-up

The news media is filled with stories about conspiracies and cover-ups. Every front page of every newspaper, news magazine, or news website is filled with articles and videos of political intrigue. This president said this to that president. This prime minister promised that businessman this or that. No matter where you turn, it seems like we cannot avoid hearing someone shouting, “Cover-up!” So, I thought as long as we are already focused upon cover-ups, I would share about the cover-up of a cover-up of a cover-up. The Jewish world is about to observe the Holiest of our Holy Days, Yom Kippur, known as “The Day of Atonement.” The Hebrew word Yom means day, but the Hebrew word Kippur comes fr

Giving a Promise vs. Giving Up a Promise

As a small child, I sat in my synagogue’s Hebrew School as our teachers would share stories from the Tanakh (the Hebrew Scriptures or Old Testament). I remember listening with excitement as they would share about the heroes of our faith. The greatest of those heroes was Abraham, the father of our faith. We would hear about how G-D spoke to Abraham: Genesis 12:1 Then Adonai said to Abram, “Get going out from your land, and from your relatives, and from your father’s house, to the land that I will show you. I remember thinking how much faith a person must have in order to get up and leave everything they knew and be willing to travel somewhere without knowing where they will be going and when
