Understanding the Bible in Two Thoughts

Because of my work on the Tree of Life Version of the Bible as a part of the theology team, I am often asked about theology. My immediate response is always the same: “My theology rests upon one statement: G-D is smart. There is nothing you or I will ever think about that G-D hasn’t already thought before. There is nothing we will ever come to know that He didn’t know already. G-D knows the end from the beginning and there is no place in time we will ever arrive at that G-D wasn’t already there.” I follow up this statement by saying that if you want to understand the Bible, there are only two things you need to know. The first is what I just said, that G-D is smart. The second is “Every time

Learning to See the Miracle of a Talking Donkey

I can remember the first time that I heard the story of Balaam and his donkey. I remember my first thought was not “how can a donkey talk?” I was not nearly as curious about the donkey speaking as I was that Balaam doesn’t even seem to flinch when the donkey does talk. As we read in the verses below from Numbers 22: 28 Then Adonai opened the donkey’s mouth and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?” 29 Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you’ve made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you now!” 30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey which you have ridden as always to this day? Have I ever been in the habit of d

An Old Thing a New Way

I was participating in a large conference meeting recently and enjoying a worship service while awaiting the keynote speakers message when I heard a few people who were sitting directly behind me discussing the service. I didn’t want to hear them but they were speaking loud enough to be able to be clearly heard above the worship team (which meant they were talking really loud). What I heard them say was not something new, it is something I have heard said countless times over my nearly 40 years as a believer in Messiah Yeshua and many times in synagogue before I came to faith in Yeshua as my Messiah. I am certain that once you see the statement below you will also say that you have heard it

Callings are to Lift Up, Not to Lift Us Up

I live in the Panhandle of Florida right in the middle of the deep south football country. During the football season, it is not unusual to see actual fistfights between fans of rival teams not only in stadiums, but also in grocery stores. You hear people shouting that their team is #1, their quarterback is the best etc. Jokes are told, insults are levied, tee shirts are worn and banners are flown. My own family members are supporters of differing teams, some from Florida and some from Alabama. These rivalries when kept in check and keeping godly attitudes can be fun, but when not kept in the right spirit they can be destructive. This same destructive spirit can and has many times invaded th

Blaming G-D for Our Choices

Recently I was counseling a young person who was having difficulties in their life. After only a few minutes, it was clear that their problems were the result of their own choices and actions. My response to their situation was to turn to Number chapter 20:1-5 and read it with them. 1 In the first month, the entire community of Bnei-Yisrael arrived at the wilderness of Zin. The people stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried. 2 Now there was no water for the community, so they assembled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The people quarreled with Moses saying, “If only we had died when our brothers died before Adonai! 4 Now why have you brought the community of Adonai into this wilderness,
